Rumina Woods

About the Project

Rumina Woods is a passion project I’m developing to extend the technology discussed in my dissertation project—think Long Live the Queen with a Girl Underground twist. You play as Clara, a poor girl in the rural southern US, who deals with a chaotic home life by escaping into an Alice-in-Wonderland style surreal fantasy world, Rumina. There, she befriends strange creatures, helps them with their problems, and begins to learn about her family’s darker secrets. But a mysterious plague is threatening Rumina, and its Spread seems to be fueling trouble at home.

The player engages with the world by making narrative choices and enchanting objects which she can give to various characters throughout the simulated world. Her choices have deeply-simulated procedural consequences that can radically alter the narrative.

More info about the underlying simulation and the game itself is available in Chapters 8 and 9 of my dissertation.
